A medium-grit natural whetstone from Ardennes-Coticule, consisting of two distinct layers: a Coticule seam bonded to black slate backing. The Coticule layer provides the actual sharpening surface, while the slate acts as a structural base. Because each stone is quarried naturally, the thickness of the Coticule seam varies from stone to stone, and fine hairline cracks may appear along the edges—both are normal characteristics of this brittle material and do not affect sharpening performance. Sizes and shapes also vary between stones.
