The Rawlings Basket Hilt Sparring Sword features a 34″ silver blade and 41″ overall length, with a black guard, basket hilt pommel, and brown thermoplastic handle. Developed in conjunction with Dave Rawlings of the London Longsword Academy, this training sword uses reinforced high-impact polymer instead of steel, making it safer for sparring while still providing realistic weight and handling characteristics. The blade is designed to flex in the final third of its length toward the tip, enabling safer thrusting practice compared to wooden wasters or shinai. A high-tensile steel rod runs the full length of the handle to reinforce the blade-tang joint and eliminate the handle flex common in plastic training swords. The grip is made from a rubber-like thermoplastic elastomer that absorbs strike impact and grips the tang securely. At roughly two-thirds the weight of a steel sword but heavier than most wooden wasters, it delivers controlled impact suitable for HEMA practice and theatrical use. The sword disassembles easily for transport—a brass nut molded into the pommel creates a tight metal-on-metal connection to the tang while compressing the grip against the guard. Note that specifications may vary slightly between individual pieces.
